For the Bond ISM/USM, either crochet cast on five stitches and knit the first few rows by hand until a claw weight can be attached to the knitting or begin by hanging a small waste yarn hem. You can use any existing swatch with a finished edge or you can make your own by e-wrapping 5 stitches: knit two rows manually, hang claw weight, knit several more rows with the carriage, then manually knit one row of larger loops and pull one loop through the other with the latch hook tool working towards the yarn source. Break yarn and pull through last loop. Hang finished edge on five needles and manually knit one row with a strand of contrast yarn.

With contrast color (CC) crochet cast on five stitches, left to right.
Set RC = 0 COR Knit four rows. Convert stitch columns 2 and 4 to knit sts beginning with Row 2 (three rungs of the ladder).
RC = 4 COR Increase one stitch on both sides by putting the purl bump of the edge stitches on the next empty needles = 7 sts. Cut CC, leaving length to seam cuff. Change to main yarn (MY) leaving a tail of about 10” hanging down for seaming mitten. Knit 2 rows.
RC = 6 COR Push first 4 needles on left-hand side to holding position (HP). Change to CC and knit across remaining 3 stitches. Tie MY and CC tails, cut yarn. Knit 3 more rows, pulling down on knitting as needed.
RC = 10 COR Put 1st needle on right to HP. Knit across remaining 2 stitches. Loop will form around 1st needle.
RC = 11 COL Put 3rd needle from right-hand side to HP and push 1st needle on right-hand side from HP back to forward working position (FWP). Knit across 2 stitches.
RC = 12 COR Push 3rd needle from right-hand side from HP back to FWP. Knit across 3 stitches. Knit 3 additional rows.
RC = 16 COR Push first 4 needles on left-hand side from HP back to FWP. Change to MY, knit row. Tie MY and CC tails, cut yarns. Knit 4 more rows.
RC = 21 COL Change to CC, knit row. Tie MY and CC tails, cut yarns.
RC = 22 COR Push 1st needle on right-hand side to HP. Knit across 6 stitches.
RC = 23 COL Push 1st needle on left-hand side to HP, knit across 5 stitches.
RC = 24 COR Push 2nd needle on right-hand side to HP, knit across 4 stitches.
RC = 25 COL Push 2nd needle on left-hand side to HP and push 2nd needle on right-hand side back to FWP, knit across 4 stitches.
RC = 26 COR Push 2nd needle on left-hand side back to FWP, knit across 5 stitches.
RC = 27 COL Push 1st needle on right-hand side back to FWP, knit across 6 stitches.
RC = 28 COR Push 1st needle on left-hand side back to FWP, knit across 7 stitches.
RC = 29 COL Change to MY, knit row. Tie MY and CC tails, cut yarns. Knit 6 more rows.
RC = 36 COR Decrease one stitch on both sides by hanging the outside stitches on the next needle. 5 stitches remain. Change to CC. Knit row. Tie MY and CC tails, cut yarns. Knit 3 more rows. Put latch hook below 3rd purl bump of stitch 2 and 4 and convert to knit stitches (3 rungs of the ladder).
RC = 40 COR Manually knit one row of slightly larger stitches and bind them off by pulling each loop through the next one, working towards the yarn supply. Break off yarn and pull tail through last loop.

Finishing: Fold thumb in half, right sides together. With CC, overcast along one side, weave yarn across top and overcast down other side. Fold mitten in half, right sides together. With CC, overcast cuffs. With MY overcast along one side of mitten, weave yarn through last row of MY stitches at the top and overcast down other side. Turn mitten right side out and push thumb to right side through opening. Pat into shape.

Mini-Hat

E-wrap 25 stitches, from left to right. With CC, knit 7 rows. Change to MY and knit 10 rows. Convert every other stitch column to knit stitches, beginning with Row 2.

For stripes, change from MY to CC every two rows for the last ten rows. Or knit the entire hat in one color.

Break off yarn, leaving a length for seaming. With blunt needle thread yarn through open stitches. Remove from machine. Pull up yarn tightly, secure, and seam edges together down to contrast yarn rows with mattress stitch from whichever side you prefer for the right side. Turn hat inside out. Seam remaining rows with contrast yarn and mattress stitch.

For pompom, pull out four needles to HP. Put center two needles back into nonworking position. Wrap either a single strand of CC or MY or a strand of both CC and MY around needles in HP to desired thickness. Tie a strong thread (dental floss works well) around center of pompom, pull up tightly, and tie into a knot. Remove pompom from needles. Cut loops with small scissors. Fluff and trim as needed. Secure to top of hat.

Hang the 2 sets of 3 sts on WY on the same six needles, purl sides facing forward, so that their side edges meet in the center. There will be 2 stitches on each needle. Following the drawing, graft stitches together. Remove from machine.

From right side, with mattress stitch and CC, join cuffs using only half a stitch as seam allowance on both edges. Continuing with MY and mattress stitch, seam both side edges together from heel to toe. On inside, weave MY through stitches. Bring out on other side and join remaining side edges. Knot remaining yarn tails together and cut or weave ends in as desired.
